Abdul El-Sayed is the First Muslim Senator in US History.

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is leading by a strong margin in the early vote count in the most hotly debated Michigan senatorial race of the US midterm elections.  As the night of vote counting in Michigan progresses, the 41-year-old politician's chances of becoming a senator are growing stronger. He is set to be elected as the first Muslim senator in US history.

According to US media reports, approximately 70 percent of the vote was cast. El-Sayed received 1,782,464 votes, or 51.6 percent of the votes counted. Republican candidate Rogers received 1,605,707 votes (46.44 percent).

Considering the margin, the top US media outlets have already started reporting that Sayed's victory is almost certain. Abdul El Sayed's historic victory in the Senate election was not easy at all. Sayed is contesting today's election after winning his own election from the Democrats. However, he has faced major obstacles in this fight from the beginning. The latest announcement by his own party's parliamentarian Haley Stevens to take a stand against him was just two days before the election.

Haley lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed. As a result, she could not run for the Senate. Although she is usually expected to support her own party's candidate, she supported the opposition candidate. However, Sayed was not upset. She continued her last-minute campaign with enthusiasm.

From the beginning, the opposing camp started making various sarcastic comments targeting his religious identity. President Trump himself was also vocal in his sarcasm against him. He was labeled a 'militant' and a 'jihadi'. Sayed's popularity, which has been vocal about Michigan's inadequate healthcare and other daily problems, has not diminished much. During the campaign, he repeatedly said that he did not run to be a Muslim senator, but to change the fate of the people of Michigan.

Incidentally, the US Congress has two parts - the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Senate is the upper house of the US legislature. There are a total of 100 senators, two from each of the 50 states of the country. The term is six years. Every two years, one-third of the seats are up for election, so that the entire chamber does not become vacant at once.

Fifty seats are needed for a majority in the upper house. In the 2024 election, which was held by Republicans (53). However, that picture has changed with the terrible defeat of Trump's party in the midterm elections. Democrats have secured at least 54 seats so far in the memorable election.
