Trump loses majority in House of Representatives, suffers major defeat in Senate

The Democratic Party is on track to regain control of the House of Representatives in the US midterm elections. According to BBC and CBS News forecasts, the party is on track to win 218 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the majority needed.

President Donald Trump's administration faces a major political challenge if Republicans take control of the House of Representatives, increasing Democrats' influence in lawmaking, approving government spending and overseeing various administration decisions.

Democrats also made significant gains in the Senate, the upper house, as well as in the House of Representatives. The party's candidates won in Texas and South Carolina, which are known as Republican strongholds. In Texas, James Tallarico defeated Republican candidate Ken Paxton. On the other hand, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican candidate Darlene Graham in South Carolina.

Andrews' victory in South Carolina is particularly significant. She is the first Democrat to be elected to the Senate from the state in nearly three decades. She will also become the first woman to serve in the state's history.

But the results of several other seats are crucial to determining who will take control of the Senate. A majority in the 100-member Senate is needed to win 51 seats. 35 seats were up for grabs in this midterm election. Before the election, Republicans held the majority in the Senate.

This year's election saw voting for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and various local level positions, including governors of various states.

In his initial reaction to the election results, Trump wrote on social media, "I was not on the ballot. If I had been, we would have won by a huge margin." His comments sparked political debate about the Republicans' results in the election. Sources: BBC, CBS News
