Bangladesh Has Now Surpassed India in Per Capita Income

In the fiscal year 2020-21, Bangladesh has surpassed the neighboring country India in terms of per capita income. According to the recent Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Bangladesh's per capita income has risen to 2,228. In Bangladeshi currency it is 1 lakh 8 thousand 63 rupees per year.

On the other hand, a report in the Indian media Indian Express states that India's per capita income is 1,946. In Bangladeshi currency which is 1 lakh 75 thousand 160 rupees, which is 270 dollars less than Bangladesh. In other words, a citizen of Bangladesh earns 23 thousand 753 rupees more than a citizen of India.

In 2006, Bangladesh's per capita income was half of India's per capita income.

The World Economic Outlook released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in October last year predicted that Bangladesh would surpass India in terms of per capita gross domestic product (GDP) by 2020. It is said that the per capita GDP of Bangladesh will be 1 thousand 6 dollars. At the same time, India's per capita GDP will be 1 thousand 6 dollars.

The Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a private research institute in the country, also said that Bangladesh's GDP growth could be 2.5 percent in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

Asked about the increase in per capita income, Ahsan H. Mansoor, executive director of the Policy Research Institute (PRI), told Prothom Alo: "I don't see any similarity between the figures and the reality. Who owns this money? Ordinary people's income increased by 9 percent? According to some surveys, Kovid has reduced the income of at least 60 percent of low-income people.

The report further said that India's economy will shrink due to the corona. Compared to that, there will be positive growth in Bangladesh. That is why the opportunity to move forward will come in front of Bangladesh.
